Management
Greg A. Pollowitz, has been the Chairman, Chief Executive Officer and a Director of iQVP since founding the company in 1999. Prior to the founding of iQVP, Mr. Pollowitz held a variety of positions with Republic Equities of America Ltd., an NASD member investment bank/brokerage firm, including President and Chief Financial Officer. Republic Equities of America specialized in funding emerging growth companies and completed many successful transactions during Mr. Pollowitz's tenure at the firm.
Mr. Pollowitz has received a BA in Economics and an MBA in Finance from Columbia University. He holds each of the NASD Series 27, 24, 14, 8, 7, 4, and 63 securities licenses and is an NASD registered securities representative and principal.
Philip B. Smith, was appointed a Director and Vice-Chairman of iQVP in March 2000. Mr. Smith founded Citicorp Venture Capital in 1967 and served as its first President and Chief Executive Officer until 1972. Mr. Smith built Citicorp's pioneer venture capital group into a $40 million fund which, through subsequent expansions, has earned Citicorp over $7 billion to date. Among the major investments for which Mr. Smith shared responsibility while at Citicorp Venture Capital are: Autex, Autotronix Systems, Data 100, Datapoint, Entrex, Essence, Federal Express, James River Corp., Nuclear Assurance, Psychology Today, Storage Technology and Right-Away Foods. Mr. Smith's selection of young associates at Citicorp includes some of the current luminaries of the venture capital industry: Ed Glassmeyer (co-founder of Oak Investment Partners), Russ Carson and Pat Welsh (co-founders of Welsh, Carson, Anderson & Stowe), Larry Lawrence (founder of Lawrence Venture Associates), Bob Swanson (founder of Genentech) and Arthur Patterson (co-founder of Accel Partners). More recently, Mr. Smith has shared responsibility for successful early stage investments in Ciena Corp. and Advanced Technology Materials, Inc. He is also a special limited partner and co-founder of Utech Venture Capital Corp. located in Washington, D.C., which specializes in strategic investments in companies of interest to its public utility limited partners.
Following a series of senior management positions at Citibank, Mr. Smith joined Irving Trust Company as Executive Vice President and Group Executive of the Worldwide Corporate Group (1977-1984). Subsequently, Mr. Smith served as a founding partner of Lawrence Venture Associates and Arete Ventures, the management company of Utech Ventures (1984-1986). In addition, Mr. Smith was a Managing Director of the Merchant Banking Group of Prudential Securities (1986-1988), Vice Chairman and co-founder of Spencer Trask Securities (1988-1998) and is currently a co-founding member and Vice Chairman of Laird & Co., LLC. Mr. Smith is a director of Careside and Movie Gallery and sits on the board of directors of many private companies.
Mr. Smith holds a BSE in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University, an MBA from the Harvard Business School and is an adjunct Professor of the Graduate School of Business at Columbia University.
Christopher "Kit" D. Illick, was appointed President of iQVP in July 2001. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. Illick was a founder and the President of the US subsidiary of Robert Fleming Holding Limited, London. Mr. Illick participated in that bank's corporate finance and investment business in the US, UK, Europe and the Far East, in addition to managing the over-all US business. Mr. Illick later joined the senior management and board of a privately held specialty reinsurer to develop and grow its business. He was particularly responsible for administration, legal affairs and its substantial portfolio of diversified domestic and international investments. After its sale, Mr. Illick undertook selected corporate management positions on a consulting basis, before returning to the investment banking business as a partner in the US entity of a British merchant bank specializing in emerging growth companies.
Mr. Illick began his career as a lawyer on Wall Street when he became a member of the Bar of the State of New York.
Mr. Illick has been a member of the Board of Directors for several privately held and public corporations, including Alignis, American
Garden Products, Biomune Systems, Biotechnology General, Alexis
Communications, Intersil, Loehmann's, National Transaction Network,
Shells Inc., The Mercantile & General Reinsurance Corporation of
America, and USA Detergents.
Mr. Illick holds a BA from Trinity College and a LLB from the University of Virginia Law School.
Bruce Bachenheimer joined iQVP in April 2001 as a Vice President. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. Bachenheimer served as the International Product Manger for Mnemonic Systems, Inc. (acquired by CSC), a high technology firm in Washington, D.C. At Mnemonic Systems, Mr. Bachenheimer conducted business in over 20 countries and spear-headed the company's international business expansion. Mr. Bachenheimer has worked as an International Banking Officer for the Bank of Tokyo and an Assistant Vice President at Westpac Banking Corp.
Mr. Bachenheimer has also founded and managed successful ventures in the U.S. and overseas. He currently enjoys teaching evening courses in finance and management, at the undergraduate and graduate level, as an Adjunct Professor.
Mr. Bachenheimer was graduated Summa Cum Laude by Pace University with a B.B.A. in International Management and received his M.B.A. degree from the Australian Graduate School of Management.
Regis W. Schultis, Jr. joined iQVP in June 2001 as a Managing Director. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. Schultis served in a variety of roles with emerging companies. From 1992 to present, Mr. Schultis has been President of the Regis Advisory Corp., a New York based money management and Venture Capital firm. From 1999 to early 2001, Mr. Schultis was the CFO for MedLinx Interactive, Inc., an internet based medical transcription service. From 1996 to 2000, Mr. Schultis was a Managing Director, Secretary and Treasurer of Finsoft Consultants, Inc., a information technology consulting firm. From 1987 to 1992, Mr. Schultis was Director of Equity Research for J.P. Morgan Securities, Inc. From 1978 to 1987, Mr. Schultis was with Citicorp Investment Management where he was the Group Head for Basic Industries (1978-1987) and the Group Head for Foreign Research (1983-1987) and managed portfolios in excess of $1 billion. From 1967 to 1977, Mr. Schultis was with Smith Barney Harris Upham & Co. as a Senior Chemical Industry analyst and was voted to Institutional Investor's "All Star" team for 6 consecutive years. Prior to joining Smith Barney, Mr. Schultis worked for 8 years in the Chemical Industry.
Mr. Schultis is a member of The Chemical Analysts of New York, The Chemical Specialties Group, The New York Society of Security Analysts (NYSSA), The Association for Investment Management and Research, and The American Chemical Society. Mr. Schultis is a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and a New York Stock Exchange Supervisory Analyst.
Mr. Schultis holds a B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, an M.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the MIT Graduate School of Engineering and an MBA From the Harvard Business School.
Millard E. Tydings II, joined iQVP in October 2001. Prior
to joining iQVP, Mr. Tydings has served as the Vice-Chairman of MCOM
Management for the past four years, his primary responsibilities revolved
around the financing of early stage technology companies.
Prior to joining
MCOM, he was employed by Capita Research Systems from 1995 to 1997 as its
Director of Business Development, and he also served on its Board of
Directors. While employed by Capita, Mr. Tydings was instrumental in the
transition of Capita from a privately held corporation to a publicly
traded, fully reporting company.
From 1993 to 1995, he worked with
CliniCorp Inc., an American Stock Exchange company as the director of
M&A in the Southeastern U.S., where he identified health care clinics
for acquisition by CliniCorp, initiated contact, and served as the chief
negotiator for CliniCorp in the acquisition of multiple clinics. From
1987 through 1991, Mr. Tydings worked with the U.S. Media Corporation,
managing television stations in Montgomery, Alabama (WKAB -TV32) and
Tallahassee, Florida (WTXL -TV27).
From 1982 through 1986, he worked with
McMillen Communications Corporation in Crofton, Maryland and served as Tom
McMillen's chief aide in his successful election to the U.S. House of
Representatives in November,1986. Mr. Tydings currently serves on the
Board of directors of Capita Research Systems and on the board of the
Davies Foundation, a not-for-profit educational foundation.
He is a
graduate of Phillips Andover Academy and received his B.A. from the Johns
Hopkins University.
Mr. Tydings is married to Susan Cutler Howe and they
reside in Skillman, New Jersey.
Edward J. Gibbons, was appointed a Director of iQVP in November 1999. Mr. Gibbons also serves as Chairman Emeritus of Gibbons & Sullivan Consulting, Inc., where he was President and CEO from 1995 until 1996. Prior to his retirement in 1998, Mr. Gibbons was engaged as Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Northeast Territory of RPR Correspondent Clearing Services. He was the Director of Institutional Operations for Instinet Corporation from 1996 to 1997 and Dean Witter from 1983 until 1989. Mr. Gibbons was Regional Director of Sales and Marketing, Northeast Territory for Midwest Security Clearance Company from 1989 until 1995. He was a Senior Vice President, Northeast Territory, for Mannie Nolan Associates from 1979 until 1983. Mr. Gibbons was employed as a Manager at Smith Barney from 1969 until 1979.
John Fox, is Vice President at iQ Venture Partners, where he assists early and middle-stage companies with their business/product planning and capital raising efforts. Since 1991, he has served as General Partner at Renard Properties, a real-estate development and management company with properties in the Mid-Atlantic region.
Until June 2001, Mr. Fox served as Director of Business Development for GeoVideo, a Lucent Technologies company, where he managed three of the company’s product offerings; supervised a team of Bell Labs consultants who were developing an optical video delivery and playback system; and helped conclude a $7 million partnership with AT&T among other notable achievements. During the past four years, he has developed business and financial plans for several companies – including Biker Billy’s Roadhouse Café, Asset International, Foreign Management Company, BronxPark.com, and PlanetCooks.com (a company he started in 1999).
From 1995 to 1998, Mr. Fox held several roles at Wheat First Butcher Singer, ending his tenure as Vice President of Corporate Marketing and Communications. Prior to joining Wheat, he spent two years as a legislative advisor to U.S. Representative Michael Huffington.
Mr. Fox earned his BA from Syracuse University and his MBA from Columbia Business School. He is currently an advisor to the NY Energy & Environmental Funders Network.
William Balsham joined iQVP in October 2001 as a Vice President. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. Balsham was Vice President, Investor Relations at Broadview Networks Holdings, Inc., a competitive local exchange carrier (CLEC) in New York City. At Broadview, Mr. Balsham was responsible for the company's capital raising and mergers and acquisitions efforts. Prior to Broadview, Mr. Balsham worked at Teligent, Inc., a CLEC employing fixed wireless technology. At Teligent, Mr. Balsham worked in various financial capacities, including investor relations, business planning, and corporate development. Mr. Balsham also worked in economic consulting, specializing in antitrust litigation support. Mr. Balsham graduated from Brown University with a B.A. in Economics.
William H. Morton, Jr., is Managing Director of iQVP.
He has more than thirty years experience in merchant banking activities, inclusive of holding executive management positions (President, CEO, COO and other) in multiple corporate ventures.
In the early 1970's, Mr. Morton was an officer at the First National Bank of Boston (Bank Boston) and later became a member of the Investment Banking firm of Lazard Freres & Co. in New York. During the early 1980's, Mr. Morton became Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of HMS Marine, Inc. and acquired, with partners, Aquasport, Inc., Alcort Sailboats Inc. and King Marine Electronics. These companies were marine-related enterprises engaged in the manufacturing of sport/fishing powerboats fifteen to thirty feet in length, sailboats (producer of the well known Sunfish and Force Five models) and high quality marine electronics (once part of King Avionics, Bendix and Allied Signal), respectively.
Mr. Morton was also: Co-founder and President of Morton/Russell Associates, Inc., a franchise of the HQ office services enterprise (Headquarters Company, Inc.); Co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Coastal Aviation, a company established for the purpose of importing Aerospatiale general aviation aircraft into the U.S.(Coastal negotiated multi-year contracts with Aerospatiale and became respected for providing turnkey programs for flight schools and individual general aviation pilots). Mr. Morton was also Founder and President of the Risor Corporation, a private investment company, and a Co-founder of Corporate Health Examiners, a company specializing in providing annual physical and dental examinations to corporate executives in New York. Corporate Health Examiners became part of Life Extension Institute and the combined entity is now known as Executive Health Group).
Since 1995, Mr. Morton has served as Senior Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of the Memry Corporation, an advanced materials company engaged in the business of developing, manufacturing and marketing semi-finished materials, formed components and sub-assembled products utilizing shape memory alloys, primarily nickel titanium ("nitinol"). Memry Corporation sells its products and services primarily to the medical device, telecommunications, aerospace and automotive industries. The Company has locations in Brookfield, Connecticut; Menlo Park, California and Herk-de-Stad, Belgium.
Mr. Morton is presently a director of Deck House, Inc. Past directorships include; Aircraft Sales Corporation, Alcort Sailboats, American Business Assistance, Aquasport, Coastal Aviation, Corporate Health Examiners, ExcelAire Service, Inc., EZPetshop.com (now PetCareRx.com), HMS Marine, King Marine Electronics, Morton/Russell Associates and the Risor Corporation.
Mr. Morton was a trustee of the Holderness School in Plymouth, New Hampshire for eighteen years. Mr. Morton holds a BA from Middlebury College.
Mr. Morton is currently instrument rated for piloting multi-engine fixed wing aircraft.
William N. Tifft joined iQVP in January 2003 as a Managing Director. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. Tifft was Chief Marketing Officer for 24/7 Real Media, he redefined 24/7 Real Media's market positioning and focus with the additional responsibility for advertising, public relations, direct marketing and sales support for all of 24/7 Real Media's operating divisions. As General Manager of 24/7 Real Media's Media and eMail divisions, he determined their strategic direction and oversaw the day-to-day operations, setting strategy for the site acquisition, packaging and pricing of network offerings for the 24/7 Network. For the 24/7 eMail division, he lead brokerage, list management and technology.
Mr. Tifft came to 24/7 Real Media with extensive experience in advertising sales, marketing and finance as well as a background in journalism. Prior to joining 24/7 Media, Mr. Tifft was director of National Sales at National Geographic where he lead his division to record-breaking sales and earlier, held various sales, marketing and finance management roles at Time Inc., including stints at Sports Illustrated, Time International and Time Inc. Corporate Marketing. Previous to that, Mr. Tifft was a magazine editor at both Signature and Esquire Magazines.
Will Tifft is a graduate of Brown University and also holds an M.B.A. from Columbia University.
Elena Nesterova joined iQ as Financial Analyst and Assistant to the Vice Chairman.
Ms. Nesterova was sponsored to the United States by the United Nations in February 2001. She has worked as a financial analyst for the WHD Humanitarian Foundation in Moscow (a Moscow affiliate of the United Nations) and Otechestvo Insurance Company.
Elena has a Masters degree in Finance from the City of Moscow State Financial Academy, Russia's #1 Business School. She enjoys music and sports and has managed several account relationships at iQ Venture Partners, Inc.
Lloyd Bankson joined iQVP in December 2002 as a Managing Director. Before joining iQVP, Mr. Bankson was a Managing Director of JPMorgan in the Financial Institutions Group. Mr. Bankson was responsible for the origination of investment banking services including mergers, divestitures, equity offerings, capital markets and credit derivatives for European and Canadian financial institutions.
From 1987 to 1995 Mr. Bankson was a Vice President at Goldman Sachs & Co. in London and New York responsible for origination of investment banking services for European financial institutions.
From 1975 to 1987 Mr. Bankson was a Managing Director and Senior Vice President at Citigroup in Hong Kong and London.
Mr. Bankson is a graduate of Princeton University. He is married with three children and enjoys sailboat racing, fly-fishing and snowboarding.
Victor von Althann joined iQVP in June 2003 as a Managing Director.
Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. von Althann was a senior insurance executive with Guy Carpenter & Co., Inc., a reinsurance intermediary wholly-owned by Marsh & McLennan Cos., Inc. where he spent over twenty-two years in positions of increasing responsibility handling the U.K. and London Market business. He began his career as an underwriter with Gerling Konzern A.G. in Cologne where he specialized in products' liability coverage from 1973 to 1975.
More recently, Victor von Althann was a reinsurance consultant handling a variety of assignments, among them advising a large U.K. law firm on the structure of markets and scope of contract coverages. Principal and advisory activities include leading an investor group in the restructuring of .COMDAQ Corporation of Austin, TX. Mr. von Althann worked on the development of an internet based exchange for intellectual properties and served as chairman of the creditors' committee when the company filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.
Mr. von Althann graduated with an MBA in finance from the Wharton School in 1972 and an LLB from the University of Munich Law School in 1969.
He is married to Natica von Althann and they have three children. The family resides in New York City and in Bedford, N.Y.
John W. Smuda joined iQVP in August 2003 as a Managing Director.
He has been the Controller for IVAST, Inc., a MPEG-4 software company in California. Prior to that Mr. Smuda served as a Director of Finance/Controller for Diadexus, Inc., Netobjects, Inc., RHI Management Resources, Inc. and Digital Video Systems, Inc.
From 1992 till 1998 Mr. Smuda was a Vice President of Private Equity Partnership, LLP. and Spenser Trask Securities, Inc., he worked with Philip B. Smith, a Founder and Managing Director.
Mr. Smuda had pursued a scientific career and was an IRTA Fellow at the laboratory of Molecular and Cellular Biology ( NIDDK) at National Institutes of Health and a National Research Council Fellow at Naval Research Laboratory prior to graduating from Columbia Business School.
Mr. Smuda holds an MBA in Finance and Management from Columbia University as well as PH. D. in Biochemistry from Georgetown University, Washington, D.C.
Mark L. von Kreuter joined iQVP in September 2003 as a Managing Director. Prior to joining iQVP, Mr. von Kreuter had an 18-year career on Wall Street as an institutional equity salesman.
From 1985 to 1995, Mr. von Kreuter was a Vice President in the Institutional Equity Sales department of Smith Barney, specializing in selling equity research and corporate finance products to banks, insurance companies, pension funds, mutual funds, and private hedge funds.
In 1996 to 1997, Mr. von Kreuter was a Managing Director in the Institutional Equity Sales Department at Cowen and Company, specializing in selling technology and healthcare research and corporate finance products to institutional investors.
In 1998 and 1999, Mr. von Kreuter was recruited to co-manage the Institutional Equity Sales Department of TD Securities, the U.S. division of the Toronto-Dominion bank of Canada. In addition to his management responsibilities, Mr. von Kreuter specialized in selling technology, entertainment, and media research and corporate finance products.
In 2000, Mr. von Kreuter was a partner at C.P. Eaton and Associates, and specialized in raising institutional funds for Venture Capital and Private Equity partnerships.
Mr. von Kreuter was most recently a principal and co-manager of Institutional Equity Sales at W.R.Hambrecht and Company.
Mr. von Kreuter received a B.A. from Princeton University in 1985, and has an M.B.A. from the NYU-Stern School of Business.
Stephen Elliott worked in the private equity field first in the early '80s at Citicorp in London and New York where he modeled and worked on M&A, LBO, and VC deals. After eleven years of Japan experience and five years of various start-ups in both the US and Japan, he joined iQ Venture Partners in 2003. Originally an international banker with Citigroup, Chase, and IBJ, he has extensive experience in Germany and the US, as well as the UK and the Philippines. He has held management positions at Nippon Motorola and Trimble Navigation Japan, and consulted to various companies. Through work and education, he has a broad perspective on both finance and technology, especially related to IT and telecom. Educated at primarily at Caltech and Harvard Business School, he has also studied at Cornell University (Japanese) and the University of Cologne (where he was a teaching assistant in mathematics for two years). He speaks German fluently and is able to read business and technical Japanese. He is the father of two sons, both of whom have attended Yale.
